Most tattoo education stops at technique. How to hold a machine, how to pack colour, how to build a gradient. That knowledge matters — but it is table stakes. It gets you into the industry. It does not get you to the next level.

The artists who attend Volkan Demirci's workshops in London are not beginners. They are working professionals — many with years of experience, established clientele, and solid technical foundations. What they come for is something different: the thinking behind the work.

Volkan has been tattooing since 1998. He has judged at international conventions, been featured in Tattoo Life, Total Tattoo, and Inked Magazine, and built a recognisable visual language over 25 years that cannot be imitated. His workshops are attended by artists from across Europe — not because he teaches technique, but because he teaches vision.

What gets taught

The curriculum is not fixed. It adapts to the artists in the room — their level, their specific weaknesses, the direction they want to develop. But the core areas are consistent.

01
Colour theory & palette building
How to construct a palette that creates tension and resolution — contrast-based, not decorative. Why less colour often produces more impact. How to make colour work across different skin tones.
02
Composition for the body
Designing with anatomy in mind — how muscle structure, movement, and placement shape what is possible. Why compositions that ignore the body age poorly, and how to design ones that age well.
03
Developing a visual signature
What it means to have a recognisable design language — and how to develop one that is genuinely yours rather than an accumulation of influences. The discipline of working within constraints to find your own voice.
04
The design process
How to work from a client brief through to a finished design — using Procreate, working from reference without copying, building layouts that are specific to the person wearing the work.
05
Combining colour & black-grey
The technical and compositional challenges of using both in the same piece — when it works, when it does not, and how to execute it in a way that holds together over time.
06
Vision & career development
How to think about your career as a creative practitioner — building a body of work, positioning yourself in the market, and the mindset required to keep improving at a high level.

"You are only as big as your vision. Tattoos on skin are just a finished product — that is 10% of the work. You need to focus on the other 90%. If you are not enjoying the 90%, you are in the wrong business."

Who they are for

✓
Working professionals with existing experience
Artists who have been tattooing for at least 2–3 years, have a client base, and are technically proficient. The workshops assume a foundation — they do not build one.
✓
Artists who want to develop in colour
Colour at a high level is one of the most technically demanding disciplines in tattooing. Artists who work primarily in black and grey and want to add colour seriously, or those who already work in colour but want to refine their palette approach.
✓
Artists at a creative plateau
Technically capable but feeling like the work is not progressing. This is often a vision problem, not a skills problem — and it is the most common reason experienced artists come to these workshops.
✓
Artists interested in Japanese surrealism or abstract realism
Artists drawn to the aesthetic territory Volkan works in — complex composition, colour as structure, surreal elements combined with technical realism — and who want to understand how that work is built from the inside.
Not for

Complete beginners, people still in apprenticeships, or anyone looking for a basic introduction to tattooing. The workshops are designed for practitioners who already know what they are doing and want to push further — not for people who are still finding their footing.

The format

Full day or multi-day depending on focus. Most workshops run as intensive formats — concentrated, practical, with time to work through problems in real time.
✈️
International artists
Artists travel from across Europe for these workshops. London makes it practical — well connected, with accommodation options at every level. Enquire for scheduling around your travel dates.

Why London

London is one of the most demanding tattoo markets in the world — and one of the most creatively competitive. Working at a high level here for years produces a specific kind of discipline. The clients are educated, the competition is serious, and the standard required to sustain a private studio practice is high.

That environment shapes the teaching. What Volkan brings to workshops is not theory abstracted from practice — it is the result of 25 years of working at the sharp end of the industry, in one of its most demanding cities.

"London is a great city and I am really enjoying being part of it. I can recommend any artist to visit — it is almost the British capital of art and museums. Two big impacts on my art were moving to London and choosing to improve my skill on canvas."

What artists take away

The most consistent feedback from artists who have attended is not about a specific technique they learned. It is about how they think about their work afterwards — a shift in perspective that changes how they approach design, colour, and their own creative development.

That is what 25 years of serious practice produces when it is communicated directly. Not a curriculum — a point of view. And a point of view, once genuinely absorbed, changes everything that follows.

Workshops run from Volkan's private studio in Wandsworth, London. Available to professional tattoo artists. Dates are limited — enquire through the workshop page for availability.
