25+ years tattooing. Creator of Modern Japanese Surrealism. A design language built through decades of restless, deliberate work — not a style, a signature.
Volkan Demirci started tattooing in 1998 in Turkey. What began as a craft became a language — one built over decades across different studios, cities, and clients who trusted him with something permanent.
He didn't come from an art school background. He studied philosophy at university — a discipline that teaches you to question categories, not accept them. That instinct shows up in the work: everything sits in tension. Dark and light. Structure and chaos. The organic and the architectural.
Two things shifted his trajectory. The first was moving to London. The second was a decision to stop tattooing for a period and focus entirely on improving as a painter — working on canvas, studying anatomy, developing his own compositional layouts. That discipline became the foundation of his signature.
"Two big impacts on my art were moving to London and choosing to improve my skill on canvas. I really wanted to emphasise this because admitting your capability is the key — otherwise you can't improve."
Volkan Demirci · Tattoo Life MagazineModern Japanese Surrealism isn't a marketing term — Volkan created it because no existing category was accurate enough to describe what he was doing. It draws from Japanese tattooing, references surrealism, is grounded in realism — but sits exclusively in none of them. Colour built on contrast. Composition designed around the body wearing it. Every piece created from zero, no templates, no flash.
"My colour palettes are usually based on contrast, and whenever I'm trying to create a design, at the end of the day it all looks like a yin and yang. I didn't try to do it on purpose but it is happening — and I think philosophy affected my vision a lot."
